Please note, candidates with professor recommendation, previous SI attendance experience, and formal/informal teaching/tutoring experience will be prioritized. No positions are guaranteed.
Job Description:
As an SI Leader you will be responsible for planning and hosting 2 sessions/week that focus on the current content being taught in the course you are supporting. In sessions you will be expected to facilitate group learning with collaborative learning techniques (CLTs) unique to the SI program that encourage students to learn from each other rather from a traditional "teacher".
Qualifications:
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) is required
- Received an A in the course they are covering
- Good interpersonal and communication skills (to be determined by the SI Supervisor) are required
- Great time management skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities
- Ability to take and give constructive feedback
- Ability to follow strict program policies, deadlines, and schedules
- A structured evening schedule that allows you to commit to SI sessions
- Knowledgeable in ZOOM/TEAMS/CANVAS/NAVIGATE is highly encouraged
- Previous experience attending SI preferred
- Previous (formal/informal) teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred
Job Overview:
- 10 - 12 Hours per Week
- Plan and facilitate two 1 hr hybrid review/study sessions every week
- Offer two flexible office hours per week
- Attending assigned SI class lectures 2-3 times per week
- Send SI reminders and materials through Canvas to assigned students
- Host SI session observations twice a semester
- Attending Bi-weekly Ongoing training
- Mandatory Pre-Semester Training (Spring 2024 – week of January 13th) for two days
- Commit to a 13-14 week contract (re-hiring is reviewed term-by-term)
- Ensure confidentiality of all pertinent information
- Provide information and excellent customer service to constituents
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment
- Ability to comply with university policies
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance
SI Leaders Do:
- Base their sessions over the weekly material covered in class
- Cover only main concepts
- Use collaborative/group learning to facilitate SI sessions
- Help students review/retain lectures on an ongoing basis
SI Leaders Don't:
- Assist in the classroom or facilitate classroom learning (that is an LA/TA role)
- Review graded work or grade work
- Proctor exams or lecture for a professor
- Offer intensive one-on-one academic support (that is tutoring role)
- Reteach entire lessons during SI sessions
